Strafford, Missouri….Route 66 Days

One of the stops we’re going to make is in Strafford, Missouri, for Route 66 Days. I’m very excited about this, as it’s sort of a homecoming for me.

1975 was the first time I laid eyes on a Hammer Dulcimer, and it was in Springfield, Missouri, just a few miles west of Strafford. It was a moment of magic for me…for from the first time I heard one, I just KNEW that I HAD to have one, and learn to play it.

Now, 30+ years later, I’m still playing. And I get to play on Route 66. It’s a dream come true.

We’ll be playing at the Strafford Route 66 Festival on Saturday, September 12th from 12-1PM and again from 5-8PM. We hope you’ll stop by and say hello! And, if you want to check out the festival online, the link is here.

Spotlight: The Munger Moss Motel, Lebanon, Missouri

One of the real treats for us is being able to stay in the historic Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon, Missouri. We’ll be in Lebanon playing for the Route 66 festival as part of our tour, and we’re quite stoked about being able to stay here.

The Munger Moss won the 2006 Business of the Year award from the Route 66 Preservation association, and it’s a well deserved award for them. Everyone I’ve talked to that has stayed there has had a fabulous stay.

The Munger Moss opened in 1946, and has been maintained in pristine condition with a fabulous neon sign and Route 66 themed rooms. It promises to be a great stay there!

Traveling the road in 1941

Holly and I were playing a gig last week and met a delightful older couple, who I take to be somewhere in their 80s. When we told them of our upcoming tour, they told us that in 1941 they had driven the road in a 1937 Plymouth. The wife is, apparently, a stickler for records and kept records of the entire trip. They made the entire trip..gas, meals, lodging, for $38.68. They told us gas was 12 cents a gallon, Motels a buck or two a night, and meals around a dollar.
My, how times change. They made the entire trip for what it takes to fill our van with one tank of gas. We’re looking forward to seeing them soon, hearing their memories of the road, and maybe even seeing some pictures.

That’s what this trip is all about….making and sharing memories!

Wigwam Motel in Rialto, California

One of the landmarks of Route 66 is the Wigwam motel in Rialto, California. Their website says they are an “icon of Route 66″ and that certainly describes them. I’ve been seeing Wigwam postcards and pictures for as long as I can remember.

There are two other remaining Wigwam motels that I’m aware of, one in Cave City, KY, and the other in Arizona.

We’re still working on our schedule, but even if we don’t to stay the night at the Wigwam in Rialto, we’ll certainly stop in for a visit!

Pops, Arcadia, Oklahoma

A friend of mine turned me on to this place in Aradia, Oklahoma. I imagine after many hours on the road, a nice, cold, bottle of pop would the spot.

I don’t know if we’ll be passing by this place in the daytime or nighttime, but from their website, the nighttime view looks nothing less than spectacular. I think we’ll have to stop for at least a bottle of pop here!

Couch Surfers…..

One of the things we’re wanting to accomplish with this trip across Route 66 is to make connections and new friends. I was just sent a wonderful website called Couch Surfing. I especially like the mission statement of this group: “Participating in making a better world, one couch at a time”.

I’ve recently been reading about some of the old time buskers who worked their way across the country, and the lasting friendships they made in the towns they played in..some of those friendships lasted for the rest of their lives.

This exactly one of the goals of this trip…to meet folks all around Route 66, form friendships, and spread peace and love through music. I can’t think of any better way to do it than couch surfing!

Patchwork featured on a new compilation CD….

Just a note to let you know that Patchwork is featured on the new “Give a Girl a Chance” CD, which benefits The Tenderness Tour which was founded by Richard Propes, who, by the way, is the man responsible for Rick and Holly meeting.
This is a wonderful compilation of 19 songs featuring, besides Patchwork, Carrie Newcomer, Dean Phelps, The Trust Project, and many others. It’s certainly a worthy addition to any music collection!

If you’re in the Indianapolis area, the CD Release Party, featuring performances by several of the artist, will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 14th, at 2PM, and the Northview Church of the Brethren, 4555 E 46th Street, in Indianapolis! Come on out and join us!

A mention on the web, and Global Freeloaders….

Just a quick update.
First of all, the Indy Kicks It tour got a mention on the Lebanon/LaClede county Route 66 Society website and hope y’all will take a moment and check it out!
Secondly, Gabrielle, the photographer/journalist who is going on the trip with us came across the website Global Freeloaders which is a site where folks exchange/offer housing for travelers. It’s a GREAT idea and we’re going to take a look at it for folks who might live on or close to the route.

One of the things that we’re going to be looking at during this trip is the old time busking lifestyle…that of musicians and minstrels who travelled from town to town, performing and finding places to sleep whever they could. This site could be very valuable to us.

We hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend….Holly and I spent it in small towns in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. You can read a bit more about that trip here.
